Sonia D. Coleman is an award-winning attorney, speaker, instructor, presenter and the Principal and Founder of the Law Office of Sonia D. Coleman, P.C. With over a decade of experience, Ms. Coleman has an innate ability to develop and build relationships with individuals at all levels and reach a consensus. Prior to the formation of her own firm, Ms. Coleman acquired extensive experience in major corporations. Her clients benefit from her calm and creative approach to solving problems. She has spearheaded many projects and contributed to the efficiency of corporate processes and compliance procedures, including the redesign of corporate contracts/templates and guidebooks.
Ms. Coleman has successfully resolved thousands of claims and litigated matters, including health insurance, breach of contract, commercial property and casualty, commercial automobile liability, premises liability, general liability, personal injury, harassment, discrimination, wrongful discharge, ADA, fair employment practices, wage and hour issues, directors and officers, medical malpractice and real estate errors and omissions. She has advised and counseled senior level executives on preventive corporate strategies.
Ms. Coleman has managed a myriad of domestic and international issues and disputes in the United States Paris, France and the United Kingdom, including marketing, advertising, consumer markets, corporate real estate, and security. A persistent litigator, she has successfully argued and drafted dispositive motions before the Circuit Court of Cook County and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, including a published decision. Her corporate experience allows her to combine legal strategy with strong business acumen.
Ms. Coleman has a strong commitment to the community, demonstrated by her history of community service and aid to the underserved. As a law school student, she drafted and successfully argued a prisoner's civil rights case before the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. She also represented clients the Loyola University Community Law Center. Since law school, she has spearheaded and chaired committees for professional organizations such as the Black Women Lawyers' Association of Greater Chicago and the Council on Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO). To that end, she has served as a member of the Board of Directors for several non-profit entities. Currently, she serves as a Faculty Advisor The John Marshall Law School’s Business Enterprise Law Clinic.
Ms. Coleman has received many honors and accolades as a result of her contributions to diversity and the professional development of others in the legal profession, such as Health Care Service Corporation's President's Diversity Award and the Black Women Lawyers' Association of Greater Chicago's President's Award.
Ms. Coleman has been featured in publications which further highlight her professional, community and civic contributions, such as the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and Cleo Edge Magazine. She has presented at professional organizations, academic institutions and associations. Currently, she serves as an Adjunct Professor at Dominican University. There, she designed and facilitated the pioneer Contracts Course for the Legal Studies Program and taught Strategic Corporate Communications to prospective Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science students.
Ms. Coleman has also served as a Writer in Residence for Ms. JD, where she interviewed female attorneys about how to be successful in the legal profession.
Ms. Coleman earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Howard University and her Juris Doctor from Loyola University of Chicago. She is currently a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and has been a member of the American Bar Association and the South Suburban Bar Association. She was selected to be a Leadership Greater Chicago Fellow in 2010.
